What I would choose for my Alone Gear List
There are a few items that are location dependent but the core of my list would be:
Gear | Model | Rationale |
Sleeping Bag | Wiggy’s Antarctic Bag -60F | Rated for extreme cold because starvation makes the body run colder. Synthetic so moisture build up and rain becomes less of an issue. |
Multi-tool | Leatherman Super Tool 300 | It’s the most most heavy duty Leatherman. Pliers, file, and knife in one. |
Ferro Rod | ½” by 5” Ferro rod | I’d rather have a simple, reliable firestarter, instead of wasting calories using a bow drill. This is an item that someone highly skilled in friction fire might decide to forego, but I think survival common sense and murphy’s law applies. |
Fishing Line and Hooks | circle hooks | It’s the most effective food procurement tool, and for trotlines. Not very useful in winter. |
Pot | Stowaway MSR Pot | Or a GSI aluminum dutch oven |
Axe | Schrade SCAXE2L 15.75” | Not too long, not too short. It should be compact, but effective. I used to think a full tang steel axe was better, but they are too heavy for winter use with mitts. |
Bow and Arrows | Samick Sage #50 | Would prefer a survival bow, but only wooden bows are allowed 🙁 For hunting small & big game if lucky |
Gill Net | Custom | Passive fishing, and it’s how fishing for sustenance is done. There’s a reason why commercial fishing is done using nets. |
Wire | snare wire | For fishing leaders, hooks, and snares. |
Saw or rations | Depending on overall strategy I would choose a Big Boy silky saw or rations. |
I would not take:
Gear | Item | Rationale |
Saw | Silky Big Boy | Unless most of the trees are very very wide an axe should be enough. In a place like Vancouver Island I would trade the axe for a saw. |
Knife | Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty | I can carve, skin, and fillet with a multitool. |
Food Rations | Pemmican | I would rather put on more meat in my bones and have extra hooks. |
Paracord | Assorted colors for lures. Orange and pink are harder to lose. Also camo color for traps. | A hammock can be a bigger supply of paracord. And wire is more useful. |
Viewers seem to focus too much on the tools, but I’d say that outdoor clothing is equal if not more important than tools. Also a few contestants have made poor choices of gear, but have won or stayed out there for a really long time. Sam didn’t bring hooks in season 5, but won, for example. Brooke and Dave brought soap. Clearly, attitude trumps gear in survival.

I like this. It seems to me they have changed the gear list this year. I was trying to see if I could find list from each season. I was thinking there were more items provided in basic gear that are now on the 10 item list?
Don’t care about any of those things. Just want to know the make and model of each person’s overcoat. That’s where everyone needs to start anyway.
List of Mitch Mitchell’s 10 survival items brought on Alone season 1
Knife
Axe
Sharpening Stone
Bow with six arrows
Sleeping bag
Bivi Bag
2 quart pot
Ferro rod
Gill net
300 yards of fishing line with 25 fishing hooks
But when I am watching season one, I see he has a large tee-pee tent and a tarp?
My bad, he must be using the two tarps from the safety items that they are given?
And all contestants seem to have headlamps even though none of them chose to even have a LED flashlight!
Here is a list of all gear: history.com/shows/alone/articles/gear-list
This list does not have any headlamps as achoice, and its not in the ten item list either??
And Sam Larson (Runner-up) chose one 12×12 ground sheet tarp. but I see he has the one large tarp and 2 smaller tarps?
LUCAS MILLER items
1. 12×12 ground sheet tarp
2. Saw
3. Axe
4. Sleeping bag
5. Large 2-quart pot
6. Ferro rod
7. 300 yards of single filament line with 25 assorted hooks
8. Extra Tarp
9. Extra emergency rations
10. Knife
Yet he has 3 big tarps also? Apparently these look like they have been taken from the:
TRACKING/SAFETY ITEMS
1 canister wild animal repellant
1 air horn
1 backpack
1 camera pack
Camera equipment
1 emergency flare
1 satellite phone
1 emergency personal flotation device
1 first aid kit (military type – tourniquet, wadding, ace bandage, alcohol, plastic bag, etc)
1 small mirror
1 20×20 canvas tarp
1 10×10 canvas tarp for camera gear
1 head lamp
1 gps tracking device
1 emergency rations pack to include water and food.
So it seems that some contestants were helping themselves to the safety items they were given. Although the extra tarps look different between contestants? Not sure if they were allowed to do this, but it them is clearly not just a ten item choice now is it! well not how we were all led to believe. I knew something was not quite right with the amount of gear they had. It took me a little while to figure it out. But that is where it is at, they or some have dug in and helped themselves to these extra pieces of gear.
Specifically the:
1 backpack
1 20×20 canvas tarp
1 10×10 canvas tarp for camera gear
1 head lamp
1 emergency rations pack to include water and food. (Of which we have no idea how much or what they were even given? My guess would be 24 hours worth)?
And the two extra tarps, Holly molly, those are two big ticket items right there! So yeah you do get to chose ten items, but this is on top of these extra safety items that you can obviously use how and when you want. This is where you can use the 1 20×20 canvas tarp for shelter and the 1 10×10 canvas tarp as additional shelter or as a ground mat etc.
I had to figure this out because it was quite stressful seeing people with extra gear that they had not chosen and I was like WTF?
Now I know whats going on, I can now visualize what each contestant is doing and using the items for, whilst realizing where they came from.
I hope this helps others that may have also been confused, frustrated and questioning these same things. 🙂
Glen Vickory.
Relax man. It’s not rocket science how to figure it out. And by all means go on the show and then show us all how it’s done. Until then, just enjoy it!!
What do the women bring?
In season 7, a tarp is a “1 of the 10” item which no one chose, but they have them. What’s up with that? A freebee.
Alone does not have a comment section to ask about that.
I want to know what is the brand of camo Jordan was wearing in season 6.
Looks like Kuiu Verde.
Will this list get updated with Season 6 & 7 soon?
I take my hat off to all of those that have been on the show as well as those Who have applied to go. It is no easy thing to plan out and leave your life and family for an undermanned amount of time.
I truly hope to a chance at this someday!!!
So who is your new runner up for this season? I’m like Roland for winning.
Hi
Sam Larson (Season 5 Winner) used LEATHERMAN SURGE, not SuperTool
Great show !!!
What brand and model of belt knife does Roland use ?
What past contestants have not taken a Ferro Rod?
Do you know what brand is for the crossbody bag they have used in several of the seasons? Or the scarf they all seem to have?
I am skilled at none of this. But as a viewer, I wondered if things like a frying pan and food rations were on the gear list as distractions from more important items. Not that those things aren’t important, but it is a game after all! I’ve noticed how each survivor has their own rationale as to what is most important. Some go straight to shelter building and worry about food later. I guess everyone knows their own breaking points and what is most important to them. Thank you for the breakdown of supplies.
My son and I have become addicted to the show and love discussing strategies for each Season. After Season 1. I looked up the list and saw 5 lbs of Jerky and 5 lbs of trail mix and no limits back then – we had agreed 3 items being 5 lbs of food gives a contestant 460 calories a day for 60 days and we swore that food was the key. Look at the top 2 in every season after2 and you see winners and runners up ALL used rations ! Brilliant! I see season 7 limits 2 ration items and only 2lbs of each item and it’s still the key to winning we believe. We shall see.
The start of every list should be clothing
